News /Ustica exporting its model of management in Malta

The authority of the Malta Tourism Authority , hosted last week, the Director of the AMP Giuseppe Di Carlo , to understand the benefits that a Marine Protected Area may lead to its territory, as does the system of management of MPAs in Italy , which management tools are most effective and what are the problems of monitoring and funding. The invitation has arrived thanks to the collaboration between the diving Ustica and those of Malta, just as the diving in Malta , all of which are associates , the Government are proposing the creation of a marine protected area that can stop illegal fishing , especially the one in apnea, which damages the diving tourism in Malta , which every year brings about 50 thousand people. At the time Malta has no marine protected area - says the Director Di Carlo - but only of SCIs ( Sites of Community Interest ), which , however, are not sufficient to protect the resources , especially the fish , and to promote tourism. I was very pleased invitation - adds Di Carlo - the Maltese authorities that appear to be open to dialogue with all stakeholders, and that they are aware that the formula nature / tourism is the only winner for the Island. After my seminar, held at the brand new aquarium in Malta , I had plenty of praise for Ustica and its backdrops, and great interest in the management system of MPAs Italian , who has been able to implement useful and valid choices for the local operators. Of course we shared frustrations about the issues of surveillance and little funding available, but pain shared is a problem halved . As a next step , the diving in Malta with the Maltese authorities to draw up a study on how to establish an MPA in an area they have already identified and that I had the opportunity to visit a beautiful place both inside and outside the water. We gave concludes Di Carlo , all of our willingness to cooperate in this project to support the creation of another AMP that would protect our seas and help our neighbors in Malta to promote their economy.
